Conditioned Crawl Spaces – Moisture Control

Usually crawl spaces in homes or businesses tent to have vented spaces. This allows cross ventilation to occur to produce humidity and eliminate odors starting in a damp environment. Moisture related problems in homes with vented crawl spaces have been the cause of several leading sources of health problems today.

The only way to effectively keep these problems from resurfacing is to focus on eliminating the moisture source at the beginning of construction. The best way to approach the situation is to condition the crawl space as you would a basement. This would require a slab, an insulated envelope, and a HVAC supply and return system to provide heating this winter and cooling for the upcoming summer.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas found in soil & rock throughout many places on earth. This gas is the second leading cause of Lung Cancer trailing only cigarette smoking. It is almost always present in our outside air at low levels. The health concern is when it enters our home & becomes trapped. This is a special concern for those of us in Virginia because radon gas comes from the natural decay of Uranium, which has been in the news quite a bit lately because of the Coles Hill uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County. Coles Hill is estimated to be the largest uranium deposit in the United States and the 7^th largest uranium deposit in the entire world!

Now that we know there are large amounts of uranium where we live, we can assume that the possibility of radon gas is also quite high. While it is very random and two homes side by side can have drastically different levels of this harmful gas, radon in homes is a concern in our area.

How can we be sure our homes are safe? Simple, TEST your home. A typical test kit can be purchased for under $20.00. The test takes 2-4 days and is mailed to a lab, the results take approximately 10 days. If you would prefer a professional to do a computerized monitor test it will usually cost $150.00 for a professional to set up the monitor, it will take the same 2-4 day but the results can be given at the conclusion of the test.

Moldy Basement Transformed

When we first saw the home in Goodview, located in Bedford County Virginia, the basement was quite a sight. It was moldy and had a very strong mildew odor. The sheetrock and insulation were grey with mold and water damage. The back wall of the basement was constructed of wood and the mold had severely damaged the wood foundation so badly that the upper floor was beginning to sag. They needed our help and with our experience in basement waterproofing, finishing and structural issues in basements, we were the right team for the job.

First we had to address the structural issue with the back wall. We did this by building a new wall to support the back wall of the home. With the structural issue of the foundation fixed, we turned our focus on creating a finished basement that could be used as a family room and guest area. We updated the bathroom, using a grey tile to surround the tub and matching grey floor tile, we replaced the windows in the bedroom, finished the walls and added tan carpet tile. The main area, already equipped with a charming wood stove, was updated with new French doors leading to a patio, floor tile, finished walls and stairs. We didn’t forget the utility room either and added a wall covering product and floor tile to make it a clean, bright storage area.

“I can just image the family sitting around that wood stove in their finished basement on a cold winter day, enjoying the warmth,” said Shauna Parsons, President of Evergreen Basement Systems. The homeowner was very happy with the completed project and looks forward to using the newly gained space.

January is National Radon Month

APPOMATTOX, VA – With radon being one of the leading causes of lung cancer today, it's vital to bring attention to this often-overlooked danger. EBS Christmas Party 2011!

As the year 2011 was ending everyone was still working continuously. While everyone was working, Shauna was planning us a great Christmas present! She was planning a really nice and sophisticated event for our Christmas party. Shauna decided to have our Christmas party at Phase 2 in Lynchburg, Virginia in the VIP room upstairs. On that Friday, everyone was still working away at EBS. Most of our team was in asbestos training all day at our office.

Everyone was very excited about the party but we had no idea exactly how nice it really was. The event started at 6:30 that evening. For about an hour or so everyone mingled before sitting down to eat. The food was amazing! Everyone commenting through the night about how good everything was, and especially the brownies! They were delicious! Shauna put together a slide show as a recap of 2011. It was very heartwarming and funny. Shauna then gave a speech about the upcoming year and introduced everyone to Foundation Support Works for 2012.

We then had Joe Caruso, our Sales Manager, come up and give awards for the system designers who reached 2k in sales. Those two system designers were, Chris Alperti and Jerry Gilinski. Also every year we have a MVP. This year’s MVP was Jason Cox, our service tech. As the night went on there were lots of dancing, and pictures taken by our company photographer. She had a photo booth set up for family pictures, work pictures, and even goofy pictures!

Shauna also bought everyone winter company jackets with fleece vests inside. They will definitely keep everyone warm through the winter season. Everyone had such a great time at the party! We are very happy to say that we work for a company that works hard and plays hard! Thank you to Shauna and everyone else that made the night possible!

Sales Summit held at Evergreen Basement Systems

We at Team Evergreen just recently hosted a Sales Summit in our own training center on December 2^nd, 2011. The summit consisted of a lot of discussion, comments, and great food! We started out with breakfast and socializing with our attendees. On the breakfast menu was blueberry and raspberry scones, keesh, and of course coffee. We started the event with a presentation from our President, Shauna Parsons. Shauna talked about taking accountability for yourself, and never accept your own excuses. Next, we had our Sales Manager, Joe Caruso give a presentation about how we can use our time wisely at work to be more successful and accountable.

We also had Scott Lewelynn from TPS Displays give a heartwarming presentation on being passionate about family, work, and just life in general. Lastly, we had our guest speaker, Christine Kennedy. She gave a lot of great tips on how to prioritize your time, not make excuses, and how to accomplish your goals. After the presentations were over, Chef Bob had a great lunch prepared for us. Our meal consisted of delicious meatballs with homemade sauce, Asian coleslaw, an amazing caprese pasta salad, and for dessert rice pudding with a brandy-cranberry sauce. I would say this was definitely a great way to end the year while everyone is setting their goals for the upcoming New Year.

Son Donates Hair to Locks of Love

We at Evergreen Basement Systems are excited to say that we hired Craig Brosinski as a new System Design Specialist to our team. Craig brings a lot of sales experience to the team. He has been a customer of Evergreen since 2004. We are very excited to have him on the team!

Craig resides in the Smith Mountain Lake area, with his wife, Mishelle as well as three boys, Matthew, Collin, and Tyler. They are really proud of their children and love to spend time together. In fact, they are very proud of the recent decision made by their son Matthew. Matthew recently wanted to get his hair cut because he had a “skater style,” a kind of long, shaggy, hairstyle often associated with skateboarders. After growing it for about a year, it measured to approximately 10-12 inches!

He said after a while of growing it out, he didn’t want to just get a normal haircut until, his mom told him about Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a nonprofit that provides hairpieces to those under 21 who have lost their hair because of long-term medical condition. The organization accepts hair for the hairpieces from the public. It must be non-bleached, at least 10 inches long and in a ponytail when it is cut. It sounded like a good idea to Matthew, so that’s what he decided to do. By the time Matthew went to get his hair cut his hair was qualified to participate in the donation process.

There was something a little more personal about this particular donation. The mother of some kids Matthew became friends with in Lynchburg was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. Mishelle said the woman is now in recovery, but the news of her illness hit close to home to the Brosinski family. That day Matthew donated his hair he said “I shave my hair once and someone who can't grow hair gets a wig with real hair, and in a year from now, [my hair] will almost be back and someone who can't grow hair has hair, too.” Mishelle Brosinski described her son as very quiet, and keeps to himself. His donation didn’t surprise her because he’s always had a big heart.

It's National Radon Awareness Week!

Appomattox, VA – Evergreen Basement Systems was recently honored at a meeting of over 600 guests from all over the United States and Canada at this year’s Team Basement Systems Convention. The annual convention is held each year between Seymour, (where the Basement Systems headquarters is located) and Hartford, and brings together dealerships of the international network for classes, seminars, training, parties and networking.

Forrest, VA - Every September marks The Phil Vassar & Friends Golf Classic. This event was created by country music star Phil Vassar to benefit the Miller Home of Lynchburg.

Last year 164 people participated, including employees of Evergreen Basement Systems, raising more than $16,000.

The Miller Home provides both short term and long term care and guidance to non-delinquent girls, ages four through twenty one, who cannot live with their own families. They provide care and a supportive environment which encourages each girl to grow and develop to her highest potential.

Evergreen Basement Systems returns again to support this worthy cause. "We're excited to support the Miller Home through this event again this year. Giving back to our community is what we're about and we're happy to be able to help,” says owner Shauna Parsons.

Alert: Earthquakes Can Increase Radon Levels

Aftershock Continues to Quake Virginia Residents

Charlottesville, VA - The fifth aftershock since Tuesday’s 5.8-magnitude earthquake occurred today between the cities of Richmond and Charlottesville, VA, centering in Louisa Country. The initial earthquake was felt as far north as Toronto and as far south as South Carolina. AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Jim Andrews established that this earthquake was recorded as the second strongest earthquake to ever be measured in Virginia.

This aftershock, whose magnitude reached a 4.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at 1:07 near the epicenter of the original earthquake. Many residents of states, as far west as Chicago, Illinois, felt this aftershock.

Evergreen Basement Systems loves getting involved and supporting the local community. This year they have sponsored Heath Drinkard in barrel racing. Heath is 14 years old and a very accomplished rider; he has earned first place in the 2011 VA02 Youth 2D and 3D point standings with his beloved horse Laredo.

Earning these high honors has qualified him to compete in the NBHA Youth World Championship, what an accomplishment! Evergreen Basement Systems is very proud

Team Evergreen Enjoys Team Day in Style

What began as a regular company meeting inconspicuously developed into the announcement that all jobs and appointments for three hours were plants to divert away from the festivities planned for the day: video games, miniature golf, bumper boats, go carts, batting cages, food, and more!

There's more. The team found a red carpet leading into a limo-bus, which they would take to the putt putt center. Inside they found gym bags with goodies and a new Team Evergreen shirt to showoff at the center.

The day was a blast, but there was a fundamental reason for the fun--Team Evergreen's work, devotion and integrity are recognized and appreciated. Hard work pays off because we meet the needs of our customers, which is our utmost priority, but we also receive recognition and motivation from those who matter-- family, friends, and our employer.

That's what made this event so great; our employer, Shauna Parsons, values us and wanted to put the effort into surprising us!
