Conditioned Crawl Spaces - Moisture Control

Conditioned Crawl Spaces – Moisture Control

Usually crawl spaces in homes or businesses tent to have vented spaces. This allows cross ventilation to occur to produce humidity and eliminate odors starting in a damp environment. Moisture related problems in homes with vented crawl spaces have been the cause of several leading sources of health problems today.

The only way to effectively keep these problems from resurfacing is to focus on eliminating the moisture source at the beginning of construction. The best way to approach the situation is to condition the crawl space as you would a basement. This would require a slab, an insulated envelope, and a HVAC supply and return system to provide heating this winter and cooling for the upcoming summer.

A conditioned crawl space is an economical way to eliminate moisture problems on existing structures and is the only way to avoid potential problems in new construction.

Testing Your Home for Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas found in soil & rock throughout many places on earth. This gas is the second leading cause of Lung Cancer trailing only cigarette smoking. It is almost always present in our outside air at low levels. The health concern is when it enters our home & becomes trapped. This is a special concern for those of us in Virginia because radon gas comes from the natural decay of Uranium, which has been in the news quite a bit lately because of the Coles Hill uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County. Coles Hill is estimated to be the largest uranium deposit in the United States and the 7th largest uranium deposit in the entire world!

Now that we know there are large amounts of uranium where we live, we can assume that the possibility of radon gas is also quite high. While it is very random and two homes side by side can have drastically different levels of this harmful gas, radon in homes is a concern in our area.

How can we be sure our homes are safe? Simple, TEST your home. A typical test kit can be purchased for under $20.00. The test takes 2-4 days and is mailed to a lab, the results take approximately 10 days. If you would prefer a professional to do a computerized monitor test it will usually cost $150.00 for a professional to set up the monitor, it will take the same 2-4 day but the results can be given at the conclusion of the test.

I urge you to test your home, if radon is not present GREAT! You can literally breathe easy. If your levels of radon are elevated, it can be removed with a simple mitigation system that can be installed in 1 day. Make your home a healthy one!

Venting Your Crawl Space in the Winter Season

Crawl Space vents are designed to pull outside air into your home, this creates a supply of air that moves freely throughout your crawl space at all times. While many would debate how useful it is to ventilate a crawl space at any time of the year, contactors can certainly agree that during the winter season, the vents should be firmly closed. However, the truth is, not many homeowners actually perform this as a yearly task.

The purpose of your crawl space is to house the utilities of your home. When you talk about utilities, this is anything that uses energy to create heat. Some examples of those utilities are your home's furnace, air duct system, hot water heater, and pipes.

During the cold winter season your crawl space works harder to provide energy for these utilities to function daily. If your crawl space is vented, those vents make your floors upstairs cold. This has a major impact on your home's utility bills! Benefit you and your home by closing your crawl space vents this winter season.

Take Action! Get Your Home Tested for Radon!

Ready….Test…..Action!

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to be healthier? That is a dumb question; of course everyone wants to be healthier. The question is what are some things we can do for a healthier 2012?

Better question and Evergreen Basement Systems has an answer for you. Test you home for Radon to ensure you are not breathing harmful gasses.

Radon is an odorless, tasteless gas that is known to cause cancer. It is a class “A” carcinogen and is linked to more deaths each year than drunken driving! Radon enters the home from the soil beneath as part of the natural decay of uranium. It does not matter if your home is a newer construction or if it is energy efficient. The only way to know the Radon levels in your home is to test for it. Test kits are inexpensive and easy to use. We at Evergreen Basement Systems have test kits available for National Radon Action Month at ½ price so, for only $10.00 you can have peace of mind and know if there is a radon problem in your home. If your home shows high levels of Radon, don’t panic a mitigation system can be installed that is aesthetically pleasing and affordable.

“We want to inform our neighbors & friends about Radon” states Joe Caruso Evergreen Basement Systems certified Radon Mitigation Specialist. “Radon is easily removed in most homes but, since people can’t smell or taste radon, they do not often test. The only way to know if you have it is to test for it and that is what we are urging people to do during National Radon Action month.”

This should be on everyone’s to do list this January, it is easier kept than most resolutions since you don’t have to starve yourself or make a significant lifestyle change. Test your home, get your results, and determine if a mitigation system is in your best interest. Most systems are installed in less than one day and are an inexpensive way to ensure the air you are breathing is healthy. Call Today to get your test kit.
Crawl Space Energy

A home with a dirt crawl space costs more to heat and cool. If your crawl space is vented, those vents make your floors cold upstairs. This is not only uncomfortable, but it costs more to heat your house.

Houses with dirt crawl spaces have damp air. Damp air is more difficult to heat and cool, requiring more energy to do so, and this costs more money. Damp air puts more of a load on the HVAC system. Everyone knows they need to run their AC more on a humid day. But what about humidity from inside the building? Same thing. If you get rid of the humidity from your crawl space , you save money on heating and cooling costs.

Dirt crawl spaces make the air in your house damp,
and damp air costs more to heat and cool.

How much money? You will save 15% to 35%! That's a lot of money! Over the years, it really adds up! You are paying the price each and every month in higher energy bills, by living in a house with a dirt crawl space. Of course there are variables, such as how many vents you have, whether you live in a one or two story home, if you have ducts in the crawl space, how big your crawl space is, etc.

These penalties from living with, and the savings from fixing the dirt crawl space problem are real, and proven. Advanced Energy, a private non-profit organization funded by both public and private funds, has done studies to measure these effects. The results can be found on their web site, www.advancedenergy.org.

In fact, the energy loss is so substantial in a home with a vented dirt crawl space with ducts, that you may as well ignore all other ways to save energy and make your home more comfortable, until you fix the crawl space problem. Caulking around a window, or weather-stripping a crawl space door, would be like patching a tiny hole in a rowboat, and ignoring the foot-wide round hole on the other side.

Controlling air infiltration is the key to energy conservation in a building. Closing up those giant holes in your crawl space walls, and eliminating the "reason" (exposed damp earth) why they were there in the first place must be top priority.

It doesn't take long before the energy savings numbers add up to serious money. Add to that the benefits of preserving your home's value, and eliminating rot repairs and mold remediation, and you see that fixing your crawl space is one home repair you can't afford not to make.

Spread across the 26 million homes with dirt crawl spaces, it is estimated that with just a 15% energy savings, homeowners in the U.S. would save 7 billion dollars annually. That is money that is flying out of our crawl spaces every day.

Moldy Basement Transformed

When we first saw the home in Goodview, located in Bedford County Virginia, the basement was quite a sight. It was moldy and had a very strong mildew odor. The sheetrock and insulation were grey with mold and water damage. The back wall of the basement was constructed of wood and the mold had severely damaged the wood foundation so badly that the upper floor was beginning to sag. They needed our help and with our experience in basement waterproofing, finishing and structural issues in basements, we were the right team for the job.

First we had to address the structural issue with the back wall. We did this by building a new wall to support the back wall of the home. With the structural issue of the foundation fixed, we turned our focus on creating a finished basement that could be used as a family room and guest area. We updated the bathroom, using a grey tile to surround the tub and matching grey floor tile, we replaced the windows in the bedroom, finished the walls and added tan carpet tile. The main area, already equipped with a charming wood stove, was updated with new French doors leading to a patio, floor tile, finished walls and stairs. We didn’t forget the utility room either and added a wall covering product and floor tile to make it a clean, bright storage area.

“I can just image the family sitting around that wood stove in their finished basement on a cold winter day, enjoying the warmth,” said Shauna Parsons, President of Evergreen Basement Systems. The homeowner was very happy with the completed project and looks forward to using the newly gained space.

Call Evergreen Basement Systems at 800-713-0224 for help with your basement.

January is National Radon Month

APPOMATTOX, VA – With radon being one of the leading causes of lung cancer today, it's vital to bring attention to this often-overlooked danger. January is National Radon Month, making it a good time to purchase a home radon test kit or hire a professional radon mitigation contractor. Evergreen Basement Systems is an expert on radon mitigation and has made a number of recommendations for homeowners during National Radon Month.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is released from soil. Because it is a radioactive carcinogen gas, it can be dangerous to people if it travels up into their homes. Radon is responsible for 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year, making it the second-leading cause of lung cancer (behind smoking). Luckily, there are ways to lessen the amount of radon in a home, thereby preventing the contraction of lung cancer. Radon mitigation is becoming a common service that a number of contractors can provide.

“As the upcoming year approaches, everyone is thinking about resolutions for the New Year,” said Shauna Parsons, owner of Evergreen Basement Systems. “I want you to also think about checking your home for radon. Unless your home were tested for this gas, you would not know it is a present, active and harmful part of your life until it is too late.”

Radon in a building is measured by picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends mitigating any building with a radon measurement at or above 4.0 picocuries per liter. When a building’s radon levels are found to be unhealthy, a radon mitigation system is specially designed to effectively reduce the levels to a healthier amount. Radon abatement methods can keep radon from entering a house, including soil suction, which draw the radon from below the basement or crawl space floor and push it outside. Some other radon mitigation techniques include sealing, house/room pressurization, heat recovery ventilation, and natural ventilation.

Evergreen Basement Systems is Western Virginia's expert basement waterproofing, crawl space, sump pump installation and foundation repair contractor. Evergreen’s radon mitigation systems use sub-slab depressurization to reduce radon levels. A PVC pipe collects soil gasses, radon is piped upwards in the building, and then a radon depressurization vent forces radon out of the house.

With an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, Evergreen Basement Systems serves central Virginia, including Roanoke, Blacksburg, Harrisonburg, Danville, Charlottesville and surrounding areas. They have over 18 years of experience building and drying basements, and they are members of the Basement Systems international network of basement waterproofing specialists.
EBS Christmas Party 2011!

As the year 2011 was ending everyone was still working continuously. While everyone was working, Shauna was planning us a great Christmas present! She was planning a really nice and sophisticated event for our Christmas party. Shauna decided to have our Christmas party at Phase 2 in Lynchburg, Virginia in the VIP room upstairs. On that Friday, everyone was still working away at EBS. Most of our team was in asbestos training all day at our office.

Everyone was very excited about the party but we had no idea exactly how nice it really was. The event started at 6:30 that evening. For about an hour or so everyone mingled before sitting down to eat. The food was amazing! Everyone commenting through the night about how good everything was, and especially the brownies! They were delicious! Shauna put together a slide show as a recap of 2011. It was very heartwarming and funny. Shauna then gave a speech about the upcoming year and introduced everyone to Foundation Support Works for 2012.

We then had Joe Caruso, our Sales Manager, come up and give awards for the system designers who reached 2k in sales. Those two system designers were, Chris Alperti and Jerry Gilinski. Also every year we have a MVP. This year’s MVP was Jason Cox, our service tech. As the night went on there were lots of dancing, and pictures taken by our company photographer. She had a photo booth set up for family pictures, work pictures, and even goofy pictures!

Shauna also bought everyone winter company jackets with fleece vests inside. They will definitely keep everyone warm through the winter season. Everyone had such a great time at the party! We are very happy to say that we work for a company that works hard and plays hard! Thank you to Shauna and everyone else that made the night possible!

Sales Summit held at Evergreen Basement Systems

We at Team Evergreen just recently hosted a Sales Summit in our own training center on December 2nd, 2011. The summit consisted of a lot of discussion, comments, and great food! We started out with breakfast and socializing with our attendees. On the breakfast menu was blueberry and raspberry scones, keesh, and of course coffee. We started the event with a presentation from our President, Shauna Parsons. Shauna talked about taking accountability for yourself, and never accept your own excuses. Next, we had our Sales Manager, Joe Caruso give a presentation about how we can use our time wisely at work to be more successful and accountable.

We also had Scott Lewelynn from TPS Displays give a heartwarming presentation on being passionate about family, work, and just life in general. Lastly, we had our guest speaker, Christine Kennedy. She gave a lot of great tips on how to prioritize your time, not make excuses, and how to accomplish your goals. After the presentations were over, Chef Bob had a great lunch prepared for us. Our meal consisted of delicious meatballs with homemade sauce, Asian coleslaw, an amazing caprese pasta salad, and for dessert rice pudding with a brandy-cranberry sauce. I would say this was definitely a great way to end the year while everyone is setting their goals for the upcoming New Year.

Son Donates Hair to Locks of Love

We at Evergreen Basement Systems are excited to say that we hired Craig Brosinski as a new System Design Specialist to our team. Craig brings a lot of sales experience to the team. He has been a customer of Evergreen since 2004. We are very excited to have him on the team!

Craig resides in the Smith Mountain Lake area, with his wife, Mishelle as well as three boys, Matthew, Collin, and Tyler. They are really proud of their children and love to spend time together. In fact, they are very proud of the recent decision made by their son Matthew. Matthew recently wanted to get his hair cut because he had a “skater style,” a kind of long, shaggy, hairstyle often associated with skateboarders. After growing it for about a year, it measured to approximately 10-12 inches!

He said after a while of growing it out, he didn’t want to just get a normal haircut until, his mom told him about Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a nonprofit that provides hairpieces to those under 21 who have lost their hair because of long-term medical condition. The organization accepts hair for the hairpieces from the public. It must be non-bleached, at least 10 inches long and in a ponytail when it is cut. It sounded like a good idea to Matthew, so that’s what he decided to do. By the time Matthew went to get his hair cut his hair was qualified to participate in the donation process.

There was something a little more personal about this particular donation. The mother of some kids Matthew became friends with in Lynchburg was diagnosed with lung cancer last year. Mishelle said the woman is now in recovery, but the news of her illness hit close to home to the Brosinski family. That day Matthew donated his hair he said “I shave my hair once and someone who can't grow hair gets a wig with real hair, and in a year from now, [my hair] will almost be back and someone who can't grow hair has hair, too.” Mishelle Brosinski described her son as very quiet, and keeps to himself. His donation didn’t surprise her because he’s always had a big heart.

There are short-term and long-term tests available. We also offer radon testing in Virginia.

Radon is the number one in-home killer in the United States claiming 21,000 lives of unsuspecting homeowners to lung cancer—most of whom have never even smoked. Though unnoticeable to human senses, we perform radon testing and mitigation to reduce homes to levels below the action level of 4.0 picocuries per liter.
Basement Chic - Reclaim Your Space

More homeowners are discovering the space below their main floor can be a great area for family activities or a quiet space for work or heath activities. Since a basement is normally already set up for the mechanicals of the house (or easy to add), and already are closed in, finishing the basement becomes much cheaper than an addition to the home.

It may be hard to image that damp, dark space that seems to just accumulate stuff as your dream family room, exercise space or home office, but it is just a few steps away.

Prepare the space:

It's important that you keep some of your basement space for storage, so first thing is to organize all that stuff into an area of the basement that will be for storage. A great place is in the utility area of that basement where the electrical panel and water heater is located.

Now evaluate the space you want to finish and take care of any issues with dampness or leaking from the walls or plumbing.

It’s never a good idea to finish a basement that gets wet when it rains. Take care of that first and any reputable home improvement contractor will suggest it as well.

Hire a contractor that specializes in finishing below grade space:

Above grade (levels of the home totally above ground level) and below grade work are different and the professionals who work in each are trained in the nuances of each.

Below grade contractors (Basement Finishing Specialists) understand that the materials that must be used in a below grade environment are different than those that can be used above grade.

Even a waterproofed basement can get wet someday if there is ever a plumbing leak or tub mishap, so making sure that the newly finished basement won’t get ruined by an overflowing tub is part of a basement finishing contractor’s expertise.

Add your style:

This is the fun part and the possibilities are endless!

A few of the options are home theatre, yoga or karate space, home office, craft area, hobby room (trains, scrapbooking, art), home school area, library, and guest space.

One of my favorites is an ever changing area that in the winter is the guy’s football room, in the spring is an exercise space (get ready for summer swim suit season), in the summer is a cool place to watch movies and work on hobbies, and in the winter becomes a space big enough for the whole family to eat Thanksgiving dinner together.

Need a hand? Check out www.totalbasementfinishing.com for tons of basement finishing ideas or contact Evergreen Basement Systems to finish your Roanoke basement.
Tips For Finishing Your Basement in Virginia

Appomattox, VA – Finishing your basement can be a daunting task, especially with the looming fear of a wet basement. At Evergreen Basement Systems we would like to help you in your decision by showing you the new technologies to combat past basement finishing problems.

Many homeowners use drywall when finishing their basement walls. This is extremely hazardous as drywall and the insulation used behind it is made from organic materials. These organic materials have the potential, when wet, to support mold growth. The drywalls is a poor insulator for your home when wet.

At Evergreen Basement Systems we suggest you use EverLast Basement Wall Panels. These walls panels were designed for basements and they are the only basement wall system with a warranty against water damage. These wall panels will never grow mold, rot or be damaged by moisture.

Another key part of your basement that may get overlooked is the flooring. Many homeowners finish their floor using the same materials they would for any other floor. This is a major problem because your upstairs flooring is not exposed to the same elements of your basement. Your basement flooring has the potential to soak up cold from the concrete below and is vulnerable to humidity. Similar to the walls talked about previously, if the flooring is made from organic materials, such as wood or carpet, It has the potential to grow mold, milder and rot.

We, at Evergreen Basement Systems, suggest one of our many flooring options that are waterproof, will not buckle, will not support mold grow or rot and will stand the test of time.

Evergreen Basement Systems has been servicing homes in Virginia since 1993. We specialize in basement finishing, basement waterproofing and mold remediation in VA. Visit us online to schedule your free estimate.

Alert: Earthquakes Can Increase Radon Levels

Appomattax, VA – The earthquake and aftershocks that have been shaking the East Coast already have homeowners on high alert. Now there is another earthquake-related concern for those living in Western Virginia: radon.
Experts say the ground can release more radon gas for several weeks following an earthquake. An easy-to-use and affordable radon detector in the home can determine if high levels of radon are present. Long-term exposure to the odorless, colorless gas can cause lung cancer.

The professionals at Evergreen Basement Systems are the local experts in radon. Radon gas comes from the natural decay of uranium in the soil and can seep up through the cracks and holes in the foundation of your home. When radon is trapped inside a house, the levels of radon can grow dangerously high and expose those living in the home to radiation, causing lung cancer or other serious ailments. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says radon kills more than 21,000 people each year.
A radon detection kit can easily determine if your home or business has high levels of radiation. The EPA considers 4 picocuries per liter of air to be a dangerous level. If the radon detection kit finds 4 picocuries or more, Evergreen Basement Systems can install an affordable and aesthetically-pleasing radon mitigation system to vent the gas and eliminate the risk of radiation.

Team Evergreen Enjoys Team Day in Style

What began as a regular company meeting inconspicuously developed into the announcement that all jobs and appointments for three hours were plants to divert away from the festivities planned for the day: video games, miniature golf, bumper boats, go carts, batting cages, food, and more!

There's more. The team found a red carpet leading into a limo-bus, which they would take to the putt putt center. Inside they found gym bags with goodies and a new Team Evergreen shirt to showoff at the center.

The day was a blast, but there was a fundamental reason for the fun--Team Evergreen's work, devotion and integrity are recognized and appreciated. Hard work pays off because we meet the needs of our customers, which is our utmost priority, but we also receive recognition and motivation from those who matter-- family, friends, and our employer.

That's what made this event so great; our employer, Shauna Parsons, values us and wanted to put the effort into surprising us!

"One of our main Customer Service beliefs is that we give great service to each other as peers and co-workers. Our team does a great job helping each other, so we thought it was time to reward it and maybe even one up them a bit. We love our employees and taking them on a fun Team Day on May 9 was our way of saying thanks for helping our customers, neighbors and each other," said Shauna.

Evergreen Basement Systems is a great place to work and whether we're fixing a dingy crawl space or a settling foundation, testing for radon, or waterproofing a leaky basement in Virginia, we work hard and love what we do.

"We work hard together & it was great to have a day to "play together" (except for getting water shot up my nose.)"-- Joe Caruso, Sales Manager

"Whoever said something about "all work and no play" was definitely not talking about Team Evergreen! Shauna planned a great "WOW" day for her greatest asset (her employees) and we had a tremendous time at Putt Putt Golf & Games. Thanks to Shauna and Bob, we never have a dull moment!!!"-- Carole Hamlett, Office Manager

"Team day was so awesome! Just when I thought we were at a company meeting I was surprised by Shauna and Bob. Being a coach, I understand how things like team day really mean a lot. I definitely had an evergreen day!!" --Chris Aliperti, System Design Specialist
